How the clutch works
Bolt to engine block
Pressure plate
The flywheel is bolted to
the rear end of the
crankshaft. Part of its surface
mates to the driven plate.
The driven plate is located
on the splined end of the
gearbox input shaft, through
which is transmits power
when clamped between
the flywheel and pressure
plate.
Clutch operation starts
at the pedal. It is
connected to either
a cable or a hydraulic
master cylinder.
The gearbox input
shaft is splined
to carry the
driven plate.
The release bearing
is operated by a fork.
Bell housing
The clutch cover plate
is bolted to the flywheel,
and its diaphragm spring
clamps the driven plate
to the flywheel.
The tongues of the
diaphragm springs
point inwards. When
the clutch pedal is
depressed, the release
bearing pushes against
the inner rim of the
diaphragm, releasing
clamping pressure on
the driven plate.
